New Student Loan Bankruptcy Legislation – An Update
On December 11, 2006, The Minister of Labour, Jean-Pierre Blackburn, tabled in the House of Commons a Ways and Means motion to introduce an Act to amend the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act, the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act, the Wage Earner Protection Program Act and chapter 47 of the Statutes of Canada, 2005. The next step is a vote on the motion and introduction of the actual Bill. So, what’s happened since December 11?
Nothing.
Well, something happened. Our duly elected Members of Parliament went on vacation. They will be returning to the House of Commons on January 29, 2007, so obviously nothing will happen in January. The only official word on the status of what is now called Bill C – 47 can be found on the House of Commons website; click down to item #13 under Ways and Means, and you will see the above note.
That’s it.
Stay tuned to this space; we will report as more information becomes available.

has the bill number changed?
c-47 appears to be something to do with the olympics
Has there been any change since this last post on December 29th to the bankruptcy legislation? I’ve tried to look up bill C-47 on the House of Commons website but it refers to the Olympics and Paralympics. Any further information would be greatly appreciated!
As of April 15, 2007, there are still no changes. Keep watching this blog; if the government ever gets around to making a change, we will report it here.
As of the start of May, 2007, there have been no changes. Yes, the Bill number changes with each new session of Parliament. Since Parliament rises for their summer break in June, it is unlikely that there will be anything new to report until the fall of 2007 at the earliest (although stranger things have happened).
